🔀 The impact of Remix culture

I think we're feeling the effect of design trends more acutely over the last ~year.

"Remix culture" means nowadays visual patterns like this spread like wildfire 👀

I was at the original Config when Soleio said that design is the future of open source. Now we take for granted the Figma community, Framer remixes, etc...

But this idea of being able to duplicate someone else's work with a single click is still a relatively new concept.

Now the question is: what happens as breakthrough AI use cases emerge? 🤔

It's not hard to imagine a world where this behavior accelerates as we're able to automate elements of the remixing process.

Take circuit boards for example... you've probably seen examples like this from Oğuz, James, Mark, or Gabor popping up on Twitter lately.

Pretty neat, right?

Few designers operate at this level of detail because it's incredibly difficult... but what if I could feed this image into an AI and generate a circuit board of my own in a few clicks?

Will design become even more of an echo chamber?

The easier it is to remix existing high-quality visuals:

  1. The less incentive there is to invest the time necessary for breakthrough patterns

  2. The more quickly design trends spread

  3. The easier it will be for your designs to look dated

That's why I'm building out my taste library 👀

Literally the only show about design I watch”
